Seventeen years ago, Sébastien Mamet joined the Terra Group. Initially in charge of mergers and acquisitions, he took the helm of Agriterra, the sugarcane division, in 2016 and remained there for ten years. Starting in finance, moving on to agriculture and sugar production, and ending up in rum production and bottling… you could say it’s a slightly unconventional career path! But for Sébastien, it’s also a journey steeped in logic. After starting out in finance, his time at Agriterra immersed him in the world of agriculture—but above all, in human interaction. “I met passionate, diverse people who were close to nature, and that helped me better understand people,” he says. A true jack-of-all-trades, he learned the ins and outs of sugar production, mechanics, and CAPEX management; he also set about modernizing the plant through automation.
In 2026, he took on a new challenge by focusing, in Grays, on two sugar byproducts: molasses, used to produce rum, and vinasse, which is repurposed as fertilizer on Agriterra’s fields. For while he may have left one ship to set sail on another, there remains a remarkable synergy among the various entities of Terra, a group that has been built brick by brick over nearly two centuries. “It’s this wonderful story that we want to tell through our rum, particularly by highlighting, in our creations, the terroir of Agriterra and, by extension, that of Mauritius,” he says. While passing on this legacy is a major undertaking, Sébastien is brilliantly tackling the challenges of a sector that is new to him.
Supported by a motivated and experienced team, his role today is to strengthen the company’s shared vision. “We’ll place even greater emphasis on people: we are One Grays, a united team working toward the same goal, serving our clients,” he emphasizes. Another key focus will be the company’s performance, which he intends to improve through process automation and the introduction of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence. In addition to driving the company’s growth, Sébastien will also focus on identifying areas with the greatest potential and bringing together the necessary resources and expertise to capitalize on these opportunities.
