“Mauritius Rum”: The Geographical Indication Has Been Officially Established

Mauritian rum has reached a milestone. The “Rhum de Maurice” Geographical Indication (GI) is now officially established, guaranteeing the origin, quality, and traceability of every bottle, from field to bottle.

A guarantee of origin, from the field to the bottle

Only rums produced on the main island of Mauritius are eligible for the GI designation. Sugar cane is grown on the island’s volcanic soil, and fermentation, distillation, and aging also take place there. Each step is monitored, tracked, and verified.

The specifications set forth two rules:

Seven distilleries, one standard

The IG brings together seven local distilleries: Distillerie de Labourdonnais, Domaine de Saint Aubin, Oxenham Craft Distillery, Medine Distillery, Rhumerie de Chamarel, Omnicane Distillery, and Grays. Each retains its own distinct character, but all are committed to the same promise.

“Each distillery is committed to adhering to the same standards and working collectively within a common framework, in accordance with a set of specifications that is protected, defined, and approved by all.”

A Gateway to Export Markets

By ensuring traceability, authenticity, and quality, the GI strengthens the credibility of Mauritian rum and opens up new export opportunities. The global rum market, valued at over 15 billion U.S. dollars, is growing strongly in the United States, Europe, and Asia, driven by demand for premium and artisanal rums.

“Rhum de Maurice” joins the Mauritian brands “Mauritius Sugars” and “Limon Rodrigues.” This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote the country’s terroir and expertise in agri-food products and beverages.

Quality, Diversity, Innovation

The promise is based on three pillars:

A brand in its own right

Beyond the GI, “Rhum de Maurice” has forged its own identity, summed up by the slogan “One spirit.” Endless Expressions. The Mauritius Rum Collection showcases the island’s land, people, craftsmanship, and flavors. Its visual identity draws inspiration from Mauritius’s natural and cultural heritage: sugarcane, tropical motifs, iconic landmarks, and local references.

A boon for tourism

Spirits tourism is gaining momentum. With the GI designation, this aspect of the destination is gaining a stronger identity and greater visibility, and enriching the visitor experience—from the sugarcane fields to the distilleries.

Now that it has a name and a shared identity, Mauritian rum is ready to conquer new horizons and win over a new generation of enthusiasts.
