In 2026, Prévention Information Lutte contre le SIDA (PILS) will celebrate its 30th anniversary. A symbolic milestone that the organization intends to mark with a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the national response to sexual health, while reaffirming the need to guarantee the rights of all, without discrimination. The Nou Vi La/Centre Banian center in Port-Louis plays a key role in this initiative. As the country’s first sexual health center, it welcomes people in vulnerable situations for breakfast every day from the early hours of the morning. Launched by PILS with the support of the Ministry of Health, this safe space offers much more than food aid: it also provides first-line care, medical support related to sexual health, and referrals to specialized services.
PILS also offers administrative, psychosocial and addiction support, screening services accessible to the general public, and the dispensing of antiretroviral drugs. At the same time, its teams are heavily involved in prevention initiatives, both for the general public and for key populations. In terms of advocacy, the organization continues to fight for changes in laws and mentalities, while conducting research to improve the effectiveness of the response to HIV.
Founded by Nicolas Ritter, two years after he learned of his HIV-positive status, PILS was born in the family garage in Curepipe, before becoming a reference in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region. On the strength of this experience, the NGO is approaching 2026 as a strategic turning point, with the launch of innovative campaigns aimed at lifting taboos around sexual health: podcasts, digital actions, poster campaigns, “sextivals” and commemorative highlights.
