Prostate cancer: prevention and cure

It’s the most common cancer in men over 50. Silent, early detection generally offers a very good prognosis. Especially since C-Care, Mauritius benefits from the very best in screening and support for this disease. Dr Bhavish Kowlessur, urologist at Urology Mauritius and C-Care talk about it. ZAK

We’re talking here about a malignant tumor that develops from the cells of the prostate, a gland located below the bladder in men. “Some forms progress slowly, but others can be much more aggressive, which is why regular screening is so important,” says Dr. Kowlessur . The risk increases with a family history, in men of African descent, or in the presence of a sedentary lifestyle, overweight or a diet rich in animal fats.

“In many cases, there are no symptoms in the early stages. That’ s why you shouldn’t wait until you have urinary signs to seek help,” he explains. Possible symptoms include difficulty urinating, a weak or interrupted stream, blood in the urine or, in advanced stages, bone pain.

At C-Care, screening is based on a comprehensive approach: specialized urological consultation, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) measurement, ultrasound, high-resolution MRI of the prostate and, if necessary, targeted biopsy under ultrasound guidance. “Our examinations comply with European and North American protocols, with specialized radiologists and a multiparametric reading of the MRI,” stresses the doctor.

Early detection is essential: “A cancer detected early is highly curable”, he reminds us. C-Care offers personalized follow-up, coordinated between urology, oncology, imaging and support care (psychological and nutritional), to ensure modern, efficient and humane care for every patient.
