Rastafari – Nou Lidantite

Roots, spirituality, reggae…
Saturday, July 5, 2025 at IFM – Rose-Hill

Free of charge and open to all, an exceptional day dedicated to the sensitive and authentic Rastafari culture – too often reduced to clichés – awaits you on Saturday, July 5, from 12pm to 9pm! The event is organized by the Institut français de Maurice (IFM), in collaboration with the Association Socioculturelle Rastafari, the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD) and Oxide.

Multidisciplinary programming:

* A highlight, with committed Ethiopian artist Ras Kawintseb, who will bring international resonance to his acoustic performance, in dialogue with the sacred Nyabinghi drums, an ancestral ritual evoking the beating of the heart.

* A photographic exhibition by Jean-Paul Mussoodee, video projections on the history of the movement in Mauritius, live painting, a craft market, and a space dedicated to Ital cuisine – the community’s emblematic vegetarian tradition.

* A conference by Dr. Giulia Bonacci historian of African diasporas and pan-Africanism, and a round-table discussion with Rastafaris from Mauritius and Rodrigues.

Rastafari – Nou Lidantite aims to share knowledge and contemporary expressions of the movement in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean. Like a desire for inter-generational and intercultural exchange, around a subject that is often marginalized, yet so deeply rooted in identity!
Artists, researchers, thinkers and members of the Rastafari community are committed to an educational and cultural approach that recognizes a living heritage rooted in Mauritian society.
