Turning unsold food into meals

Committed to the fight against food waste for the past eight years, the NGO FoodWise has launched “Save the Unsolds “, an awareness-raising campaign aimed at recovering unsold food and redistributing it to the needy. At the heart of this action, and as part of the next government budget, is the proposal for a tax deduction on food donations made by food companies to NGOs. ZAK

Since its creation, the social enterprise has redistributed over 8.1 million meals to vulnerable populations through its network of associative partners. FoodWise also focuses on education, with interventions in schools and businesses to raise awareness of food waste and encourage more responsible practices.

According to estimates, “every minute in Mauritius, 279 kilos of food that is still edible ends up in the garbage can. Meanwhile, over 100,000 Mauritians go hungry. Thanks to Save the Unsolds , up to 3 million additional meals could be saved every year. Aisha Allee, Chairman of the Board, explains, “We want to mobilize donors who haven’t yet joined the cause, but also those who, beyond goodwill, need a collective framework and sustainable solutions to take the plunge.”

With its “Pact on Food Tax Relief”, FoodWise has brought together the private sector and civil society around a common objective: to encourage the emergence of new legislation encouraging food donations in Mauritius. The proposed tax deduction would be calculated on the basis of the cost of production, up to a limit of 10% of the donating company’s annual taxable income. For Lotilde Charpy, General Manager: “Two realities should not coexist. Every company, every institution and every citizen has a role to play in transforming these unsold products into meals rather than waste.”
