Inscribed in our DNA, the great Mauritian oral tradition has died out after more than 200 years of educating and transmitting knowledge and history. To relearn in the 21e century, the collective is taking over the Caudan Arts Centre this year.

The general theme this time is “l’art du détour” (the art of the detour), because “zistwar ” take us back in time and seize on often imaginary characters and places, to better chronicle our lives and our condition. The masterclasses scheduled for July 29 and 30 at various venues will be followed by the lecture-show, where 6 to 8 speakers will switch every 8 minutes between presenting an idea and telling a story. On August 2, there will be storytelling readings for children.

In the last century, the master storyteller Fanfan told absolutely hilarious stories about animals with… very human personality traits, continuing a metaphorical process that goes back at least to the 19e century. The hosts of this 2e edition have decided to update and regionalize this bestiary, by creating Bal Zanimo.
