Driven by a deep passion for art and a desire to promote artistic creativity in Mauritius, the gallery aims to support artists, promote their work and make art accessible to a wide audience. Its director, Asmita Chomroo, tells us more. Eugénie Sauzier-de Rosnay

Caudan as we know it was still in its infancy when the Didus Art Gallery took up residence on the Port-Louis waterfront. For Asmita, the choice was almost self-evident. “The Caudan is a lively space, where art can interact with the public in a setting that is accessible, inspiring and open to the world,” she says. A great lover of art, her vision is to make this showroom a reference space for contemporary art in Mauritius, while actively contributing to the cultural richness of the shopping center.

Michèle Maingard, Marcel Lagesse, Vaco Baissac, Davi, Priti, Mih, Jonel Bijon, Marlise Le Roux… The brushstrokes of local artists blend skilfully with talents from elsewhere. “Our artistic universe is both contemporary and rooted in local realities, with an openness to international influences,” adds Asmita. Defined by a diversity of expression, the gallery favors above all works that tell a story, reflect cultural identity and invite reflection.

While her selection knows no borders, Asmita reserves a special place for Mauritian artists. “We want foreign visitors to be able to bring back with them a small part of the Mauritian landscape: a nice souvenir, a living reminder of the beauty of our island…”, she asserts. 26 years on and still going strong! As well as continuing to expand its network of artists and collectors, Didus Art Gallery also plans to organize more exhibitions, cultural events and artistic collaborations!

Since 2000, the Didus Art Gallery has been delighting visitors to the Caudan Waterfront with an eclectic range of works.
