Tout en s’occupant des 130 chiens hébergés dans leur refuge à Moka, les volontaires de Pink Poney Charity Trust sont également sur le terrain pour nourrir, secourir et faire stériliser d’autres animaux en détresse. C’est un engagement quotidien pris depuis 2017, que Usha Oodit poursuit avec acharnement. ZA
Chaque jour, 50 kilos de riz et 30 kilos de poulet sont cuisinés pour les chiens pris en charge par l’association. Après s’être occupée de ceux vivant dans le refuge installé dans sa propre cour, Usha fait une tournée dans les environs de Tribeca pour nourrir les chiens errants.
« Nous comptons sur deux employés, des volontaires et des dons, pour accomplir cette mission. Nos moyens sont limités et toute aide est la bienvenue. » Ayant récemment obtenu un terrain à La Flora, elle espère y construire prochainement un nouveau refuge.
En parallèle, un important travail de sensibilisation est mené dans la région, afin d’inciter les propriétaires à mieux prendre soin de leurs animaux. « Nous collaborons avec les forces vives et la police pour faire évoluer les mentalités. Dans certains quartiers, le problème est en partie résolu. Si nous remarquons qu’un chien est négligé, nous allons directement parler avec son propriétaire. Beaucoup ignorent les obligations légales et ne respectent pas l’Animal Welfare Act, qui protège les animaux à Maurice. »
L’association organise également des campagnes régulières de stérilisation. Les animaux blessés sont pris en charge et ceux qui décèdent dans des accidents sont enterrés par les volontaires. « Ma grand-mère nous a toujours appris à respecter les animaux. Je considère qu’il est de mon devoir de m’occuper de ceux en détresse et de contribuer à faire changer les choses à Maurice. »

Fighting and supporting daily
While caring for the 130 dogs housed in their shelter in Moka, the volunteers of Pink Poney Charity Trust are also in the field to feed, rescue and have other animals in distress sterilized. This is a daily commitment made since 2017, which Usha Oodit pursues relentlessly.
Every day, 50 kilos of rice and 30 kilos of chicken are cooked for the dogs taken care of by the association. After caring for those living in the shelter installed in her own yard, Usha makes a tour around Tribeca to feed stray dogs.
« We rely on two employees, volunteers and donations to accomplish this mission. Our means are limited and any help is welcome. » Having recently obtained land in La Flora, she hopes to build a new shelter there soon.
In parallel, important awareness work is carried out in the region, to encourage owners to better care for their animals. « We collaborate with community leaders and the police to change mindsets. In some neighborhoods, the problem is partially resolved. If we notice that a dog is neglected, we go directly to speak with its owner. Many ignore legal obligations and do not respect the Animal Welfare Act, which protects animals in Mauritius. »
The association also organizes regular sterilization campaigns. Injured animals are taken care of and those who die in accidents are buried by volunteers. « My grandmother always taught us to respect animals. I consider it my duty to care for those in distress and to contribute to making things change in Mauritius. »
