Musician Kan Chan Kin details in his book Trash to Musicthe making of 23 instruments from recycled and waste materials. In 120 pages, he puts his techniques for making wind, string, percussion and sega instruments within everyone’s reach. From barrels, plastic drums andtin cans, he makes drums and resonance boxes for kabosa or guitar. Plumbing pipes become flutesor trumpets, metal makes sanzas and triangles sing. The artivist also recalls the origins of the instruments and shares his tips for extracting melodious sounds from these extraordinary objects. Trash to music, or TTM, puts solid waste to good use, democratizes music and resurrects forgotten skills. It marks a new stage in the dissemination of knowledge that Kan has been sharing for years in workshops and concerts.
