Nestled within the walls of a former 19the L’Aventure du Sucre has established itself as Mauritius’s must-see cultural event. After two years of refurbishment, never closing its doors, the museum unveils a completely redesigned itinerary, more immersive, more interactive and resolutely contemporary.
The result is spectacular: 5,000 m² of sensory experiences divided into nine themed areas, where monumental machines, giant screens, animated models and sound installations bring to life the fascinating history of sugar cane. From a cinematic journey to the island’s volcanic origins to the discovery of New Grove rum, every step of the way invites you to feel, touch and understand.
Among the major new features, the “L’Énergie de la Canne” space reveals how this emblematic plant is now contributing to Mauritius’ energy transition, while the New Grove Distillery immerses visitors in the art of distillation through stunning interactive devices.
The museum is much more than just a tour. At the Village Boutik, a guided tasting of unrefined Mauritian sugars and 5-star New Grove rums invites visitors to explore the aromatic richness of the local terroir. And for the more adventurous, the “Cane Cutting” experience offered every Wednesday morning introduces visitors, machete in hand, to this gesture deeply rooted in Mauritian identity.
The first cultural site on the island to be awarded both the Made in Moris and Blue Oasis labels, L’Aventure du Sucre confirms its commitment to sustainable, responsible tourism. With over 100,000 visitors every year since its opening in 2002, the museum is now writing a new chapter, more lively, more human, more Mauritian than ever!
L’Aventure du Sucre is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. More info on www.aventuredusucre.com
