In June 2024, French chef Jacques Ledu opened his business on Cottage’s main street, offering ready-made meals, as well as a range of local and artisanal delicatessen products. Delphine Raimond

The man is humble. “I’ve only got a CAP in cookery,” he apologizes gently. And yet, his career path is edifying. Ten years at Constance, including six at Prince Maurice, and a long experience at other prestigious addresses. The man is happy. At the age of six, while his classmates were dreaming of becoming firemen or astronauts, he already knew he was going to be a chef…

Having arrived on the island nearly thirty years ago, alongside his Mauritian wife Daisyrani, the executive chef is now back at the heart of his profession, combining passion and sharing. From catered dishes to in-home chef services and cooking classes, absolutely everything is home-cooked, the food is fresh and local, and the fruit and vegetables brought in from Goodlands market, where Jacques has his own habits and suppliers. He’ll teach you to master risotto, rougail and other curries. He’ll introduce children to the art of cookies, muffins and cakes… and teenagers to the secrets of pizza, Neapolitan sauce, lemon pie and many other dishes.

Because he wants to cater for all budgets, his prices defy all competition! Pastries from 90 rupees; ready-made meals from 280 to 850 rupees; weekend menus under 1000 rupees… In the window, jams, hummus, tapenade, lamb shank, beef estouffade, tuna curry, stuffed pancakes… On the stove, lamb navarrin and chicken in coconut milk…
On my way out, I bump into a customer who, understanding who I am, tells me that if she could, she would “live here, to enjoy JL’s good food for lunch and dinner”! Having since ordered various dishes, I can confirm that the chef’s cuisine is an exquisite gastronomic revolution!
