Every month, Bronze Brothers recycles an average of 2,000 cans and around 20 kilos of used coffee capsules. The Mauritian company transforms this waste into eco-responsible jewelry, combining creativity, recycling and local know-how. Let’s take a closer look at this ingenious initiative! Taysiir Joomun
Located in Arsenal, Bronze Brothers brings together a team of around fifteen people who lend a hand to nature. Before launching the company, its director, Kumar Udaye Lacha, was already working in the foundry with a small group of four craftsmen, who are also his friends. Together, they created artistic bronze pieces, sometimes shipped as far as France.
One day, faced with the sad sight of cans abandoned in wastelands and gardens, an idea occurred to them: what if they gave them a second life? On the strength of their experience, they began collecting them and incorporating them into their creations, transforming them into jewelry, key-rings and other pieces of recycled aluminum.
Recognition and a wonderful encounter
In 2023, Bronze Brothers received the Environmental Award, organized by the Ministry for Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, in recognition of their commitment to the environment. At this event, the Scott brand discovered their work. From this meeting, a collaboration was born: in addition to cans, Bronze Brothers now recycles used coffee capsules supplied by the brand – around 20 kg per month on average, depending on the workload.
Behind the creations: the work of a goldsmith
“There are many steps involved in making these unique pieces of jewelry ,” explains Kumar. In their workshop, the craftsmen sometimes start with an object to be transformed, such as a shell, or work with a model maker who shapes the wax models. They then make molds for production runs, or cast aluminum directly for a one-off piece. After cooling, each element is polished to the millimeter to bring out the finest details. These pieces become bracelets, necklaces, earrings or key rings, with the option of custom orders.
