To mark World Autism Awareness Day and International Nurses Day, C-Care took a concrete step toward more inclusive healthcare. In collaboration with Autism Mauritius, the hospital group organized a training session focused on caring for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which was attended by 200 nurses from its facilities.
According to the WHO, autism currently affects one in every 127 people worldwide, and its manifestations are varied: communication difficulties, sensory sensitivities, specific needs regarding social interactions… These are all realities that healthcare staff encounter, and for which appropriate training makes all the difference. On the agenda: recognizing the signs of ASD, tailored communication approaches, understanding sensory sensitivities, and adapting the care environment to make it more reassuring and soothing!
“Every person with autism is unique and may experience healthcare differently. It is therefore essential that our teams be trained to provide them with tailored care, greater attentiveness, and support that takes into account their specific needs as well as those of their families,” emphasizes Yasmine Hossenally, Head of Nursing Services at C-Care Wellkin.
This initiative is part of a long-standing collaboration between C-Care and Autisme Maurice. The NGO’s diagnostic center, SEDAM (Autism Assessment and Diagnostic Service in Mauritius), is already operating within C-Care Wellkin. “Autism is becoming increasingly common in our population, but it remains misunderstood by many. We are encouraged to see more and more organizations and companies committing to supporting this cause,” says Darshini Ramjee, School Manager at Autisme Maurice. This initiative demonstrates the C-Care Group’s commitment to placing people—in all their uniqueness—at the heart of its care!
