French chain Monoprix has announced its return to the Mauritian market with a new convenience store concept, Monop’, the first outlet of which is due to open in Rivière Noire in early December. Developed locally by the Aldis Group under an exclusive contract, this format is inspired by a model already deployed in France, and presents itself as an urban offering combining speed, convenience and product diversity.
Monop’ will offer around 8,500 items, including local and imported products. The store will benefit from extended opening hours and will employ around thirty staff recruited on the island. The range will also include traditional departments such as creamery, delicatessen and butchery, as well as a wine cellar and a catering area.
Monoprix’s own ranges, including Monoprix Bio and Monoprix Gourmet, as well as the committed “Je suis Vert” brand, will also be available. At the same time, a “Monoprix Maison” space dedicated to home decoration and the art of living, and a beauty corner featuring certified organic skincare and make-up, will enhance the customer experience. The opening of an independent Monoprix Maison in Cascavelle is also scheduled for December.
In terms of innovations, the company plans to equip its stores with electronic price tags and to introduce hybrid checkouts, combining human assistance and autonomy. A fully digital loyalty card is also planned at a later stage.
Finally, the Aldis Group sees the opening of Rivière Noire as the first step in a wider expansion plan for the island. An ambition summed up by Vincent Peyronnet, International Director of the Casino Group: “The return of Monoprix to Mauritius with Monop’ illustrates the strength of a model that appeals well beyond our borders. We are proud to offer a modern, responsible convenience concept, capable of adapting to the expectations of new consumers, wherever they may be.”
With this move, Monoprix intends to establish itself as a key player in convenience retailing in Mauritius.
