Founded in 2016, Small Step Matters has supported 186 projects in the social and environmental sectors, thanks to Rs 37 million raised. This initiative, created to facilitate the funding of projects of public interest, has gradually evolved into a tool for civic engagement. ZAK
“Small Step Matters is, above all, a vision: to make online giving accessible to everyone,” says Céline Planel, co-founder of the platform. The goal was also to contribute to the social and environmental development of Mauritius and Rodrigues. And thisambition has truly resonated with the public :half of thedonations received last year came from citizens ! “This is true proof of the exemplary generosity of the Mauritian people.”
Over the years, organizations, citizens, athletes, and community groups have used the platform to turn their ideas into concrete actions. Behind the numbers are projects focused on the environment, inclusion, education, and the empowerment of vulnerable people. This momentum is expected to continue with a national campaign designed to remind people that donating is now easier than ever, particularly thanks to the Juice feature. Contributions can be one-time or recurring, allowing citizens to provide long-term support for projects that are important to them.
The anniversary also has an environmental focus, with a symbolic initiative led by Small Step Matters and its partners: fruit trees were donated to six organizations working in the areas of sustainable development, educational gardens, inclusion, and economic empowerment. The initiative will also be extended to Rodrigues, where four trees will be donated to local organizations.
For Stéphane Lebon, Group Sustainability Manager at MCB, this support is part of a broader commitment to backing initiatives that have a positive impact. It is a way—much like Small Step Matters—to amplify small actions and give them collective significance.
