C-Care Wellkin places innovation at the heart of its urology department, offering cutting-edge treatments for a variety of pathologies. These include Rezūm Water Therapy, an innovative, minimally invasive technique for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). ZA
Considered a major breakthrough in the field, this procedure relies on the use of thermal steam to treat prostate enlargement, which is responsible for urinary disorders. Urological surgeon Dr Bhavish Kowlessur explains that the procedure involves inserting a device through the urethra to send puffs of steam directly into the prostate tissue. The heat thus generated gradually destroys the excess tissue obstructing the urethra.
Over time, the body naturally eliminates these destroyed cells, reducing the size of the prostate and improving urinary flow. This minimally invasive treatment, performed as an outpatient under local or regional anesthesia, requires no incisions, avoiding scars and sutures. “Rezūm is a modern, effective alternative that combines comfort, efficiency and quality of life,” Dr. Kowlessur emphasizes.
Unlike other BPH treatments, this approach preserves sexual function, minimizing the risk of side effects such as erectile dysfunction or ejaculation. What’s more, recovery is rapid, enabling a return to daily activities in just a few days.
Rezūm is aimed at patients with moderate to severe symptoms, particularly those for whom drug treatments are ineffective or undesirable over the long term. On the other hand, this technique is not recommended for men with very large prostates or specific anatomical features.
