Located in the lush highlands of southwestern Mauritius, the Chamarel Geopark is a truly unique place! A veritable living color palette, shifting from ochre to purple, through shades of yellow and green, this place—nicknamed the Land of Seven Colors—features an almost incongruous formation that bears witness to the island’s rich geological history.
Eight to ten million years ago, our small island emerged from the ocean, formed by successive eruptions of undersea volcanoes. This story did not end there, for 1.7 to 3 million years ago, the basalt that makes up the soil of Chamarel also served as the ever-changing canvas of those time immemorial. At the mercy of winds and rains, heat waves and cyclones, the volcanic rocks were transformed into eroded clay—multicolored mineral dunes whose hues depend on their underlying composition.
This unique natural landscape quickly became one of the island’s most iconic destinations. A testament to the rich history of Mauritius’s natural heritage, the site is nestled within a lush landscape that boasts exceptional biodiversity, a fascinating culture, thriving agriculture, and a unique culinary tradition. Upon entering the Chamarel Geopark, visitors are not merely treated to a glimpse of a striking natural phenomenon, but rather to a comprehensive and utterly authentic experience of Chamarel.
Explore the waterfall, located in the heart of a spectacular volcanic valley; enjoy an educational encounter with the giant tortoises of Aldabra; take trails dedicated to endemic flora and fauna; a tour of the coffee plantation to learn about the process from bean to cup, and an exploration of other local crops such as vanilla, cacao, and tropical fruits… A complete immersion in the many treasures of our island, before ending the tour on a high note at the panoramic Le Chamarel Restaurant. All these experiences showcase how nature, history, and local communities have come together to shape Chamarel’s unique identity!
Since this heritage is exceptionally valuable, preservation is also at the heart of the site’s mission. To protect this particularly fragile geological and natural heritage, the Chamarel Geopark prioritizes tourism based on discovery, education, and awareness-raising. As a result, interpretive trails, areas dedicated to biodiversity, and educational resources are scattered throughout the site, while the promotion of local agriculture, regional traditions, and the identity of the Chamarel community serves as another central theme of this initiative. This cross-cutting approach allows visitors to discover a more authentic, better-preserved, and more contemplative side of Mauritius!
