On May 15, the Rubika animation school presented the second edition of its Chroma festival, which brings together students and professionals to explore the latest creations and future prospects. Rubika offers training in the design, scriptwriting, and production of 2D and 3D animated films, which includes character design, illustration, and motion design (graphic animation)… Since 2023, about fifteen Mauritian students have graduated, with the third year of the program taking place abroad. Among those currently completing their bachelor’s degreesat Rubika in Valenciennes and Montreal, the Bissonault sisters recently had one of their films selected for a Canadian film festival.
Here, for example, three students created *Huego*, the story of a mischievous little dragon—as endearing as a dog—who bursts into the solitary life of a widower. *Luana*, by Anna Baron and Loris Lorenzi, depicts a moment of connection between a girl and her father,while *In Bloom*, by Lila Chaleon and April Hélène, contrasts the delicate world of a young girl with the harsh realities of the world around her.
For example, 2D animator Noa Nany described how his film *Indépendance*, which fosters a sense of national unity in Mauritius, created a buzz on social media. He emphasized Mauritius’s uniqueness: “ Never forget your culture; that’s what will set you apart from other animators.” The roundtable discussion, which brought together five professionals to discuss the future of the profession, revealed confidence in the country’s potential—provided we create an ecosystem, better promote our creations, and build connections in the region. Unanimously, they emphasized the importance of curiosity and the intense, demanding, and diligent practice of drawing—essential for becoming a good animator…
