A Journey into the Past

Some events inspire generations of dreamers. The sinking of the Saint-Géran is one of those places, immortalized in Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s famous novel, *Paul and Virginie*. Just a stone’s throw from the site of the disaster, the restaurant Le Saint Géran, located in the Veranda Paul & Virginie hotel, pays tribute to this story that has become a legend. Eugénie Sauzier-de Rosnay

Overlooking the sparkling sea of Grand Gaube, the iconic thatched huts of Le Saint Géran restaurant not only invite the eye to wander toward the kaleidoscope of blues and the northern islands, but also tell a story dating back nearly three centuries: the story of the shipwreck of the eponymous vessel, a tragic event that remains vivid in the collective imagination of Mauritians to this day. In this intimate and romantic setting, set apart from the heart of the hotel, flavors blend harmoniously under the expert guidance of Chef Yogesh Catooa and his team.

Passionate about combining local ingredients with French cuisine, he has crafted an eclectic menu that reflects the region’s history. Whispers of the Sea, Apotheosis of the Journey, Essence of the Reef, Southeast Trade Winds… With names that invite guests on a culinary and delightfully lyrical journey—one of which pays homage to Captain Richard de Lamarre and another to Paul, Virginie’s heartbroken lover—the dishes skillfully blend flavors from here and abroad.

Rhythmed by the seasons, Mauritian terroir shines here: patole, mouroum, sweet potato chutney, combava, and arouille artfully enhance the exceptional meats and lagoon fish, sourced directly from the village fishermen. Seafood, in fact, takes center stage on the menu of this lover of the sea. His signature dish: pan-seared scallops, glazed with a creamy kaffir lime sauce. Finally, the desserts offer delicious, indulgent interludes with tropical accents: sagoo with passion fruit coulis, matcha-guava cheesecake, or flambéed banana with the scent of the islands…
