A puppy isn’t just a small adult dog: its energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral needs are different. Nicolas Capot, director of Animalook, recommends choosing a complete food formulated for growth, since formulas designed for adult dogs don’t necessarily meet the requirements of this stage of life. You should also take into account the size the puppy will reach as an adult. A Chihuahua and a Great Dane do not grow at the same rate or in the same way. “I also advise against adding calcium or other supplements without consulting a veterinarian, as an excess can be just as problematic as a deficiency,” explains Nicolas Capot.
During the first few months, the daily portion is divided into several small meals, and the number of meals is then gradually reduced. The amount indicated on the package is a good starting point, but it should be adjusted according to the puppy’s weight, age, and activity level. In this regard, it’s best to weigh the portions rather than serve them by eye. Observation remains key : a puppy should grow at a steady pace without gaining too much weight. You should be able to easily feel its ribs under a thin layer of fat, without them being overly visible. Its weight, energy level, appetite, and stool consistency are good indicators.
Finally, treats should be given only occasionally and should never replace a meal. Table scraps should be avoided, as certain foods may be too fatty, too salty, or even toxic to dogs. “For me, the best food isn’t necessarily the most expensive one or the one with the most appealing packaging. Above all, it’s the one that truly meets the puppy’s needs— a formula that he digests well and that helps him grow at his own pace,” concludes Nicolas Capot.
