Sara-Jane Wong got started in 2019 by offering a box set of teas from the Far East on social media, noting, for example, that the original birthplace of the most widely consumed beverage after water is China and that the tea ceremony is considered sacred in Japan… A small tea room with a shop opened in 2022 on Route Royale at the entrance to Beau Bassin. And ever since it moved into larger premises downtown, at the HM Rawat Business Center, it has been constantly busy.
Stepping through the door of A Tea Story is like entering a cozy world, where an incredible selection of teas and herbal infusions invites you on a journey to distant lands—and even into the imaginations of Lewis Carroll or Miyazaki, with *Alice*, Totoro, or Princess Mononoke—characters who have inspired some of the blends. Here, you can meet up with friends, retreat to the quiet corner of the library, or browse for tea bags or accessories to give as gifts or take home.
In any case, you’ll have to choose between hot and iced options: black, green, white, or yellow teas—or, among the most “trendy” choices, colorful matcha teas. The floral decorations evoke the delicate combinations of blooming teas thatexude the scent of calendula against a green tea base. Iced teas create abstract compositions blending, for example, the ultramarine blue of spirulina with the raw green of matcha tea, softened by milk. Ocean Breeze Matcha Latte, Forest Spirit, Cheshire Cat, Cran-Merry Mint… the menu is an aromatic poem.
